publication titleAn Attempt to Set the Record Straight on Black Lives Matter (A Mother’s Perspective)publication dateSep 2016 publication descriptionLia World Travelerpublication descriptionSo I’m finally writing again after several months of inactivity due to a variety of reasons; however, I cannot stay silent anymore and feel compelled to speak. *Please note this post might be all over the place because what is going on back home (I am currently living overseas) in the United States is causing me daily to run the emotional gamut from rage to fear to sadness to depression to optimism (since I can’t fight my generally positive-realist nature), so apologies in advance for that and the run-on sentences.
As a bi-racial female who identifies as African-American, (because that is how I am perceived and treated by society), as the mother of two black children a boy and a girl, and as a diplomat who has to promote American ideals abroad including diversity, tolerance, social inclusion, rule-of-law, justice through due process, and violence as a last resort, among others, what is happening in the United States now has me horrified, completely scared for the future of my children, and at a loss professionally when confronted with questions about the ongoing violence, blatant targeting, shootings, and lack of justice for victim’s families when the judicial system fails to indict guilty police officers for their murderous actions against the African-American community.See publication An Attempt to Set the Record Straight on Black Lives Matter (A Mother’s Perspective)See publication

publication titleI Love You but I Don’t Always Like Youpublication dateJan 1, 2016 publication descriptionLia World Travelerpublication descriptionI’ve said before how complicated love can be. Anyone who has ever been in love can understand what I mean when I say you can love someone even when you don’t always like them. I know I’m not the only one who has ever been in a romantic relationship where (once you’ve left the honey-moon phase), the person on the other side says something, does something, doesn’t do something, is annoying, let’s you down, and seems to incessantly push your buttons causing you to feel so frustrated and angry that you start fantasizing about life without them in it. No matter the reason for dis-liking them, it happens too many of us and is completely normal especially in long(er)-term relationships.See publication I Love You but I Don’t Always Like YouSee publication
publication titleTips and Tricks for Successful Holiday Road Tripspublication dateDec 2015 publication descriptionLia World Travelerpublication descriptionSo the holidays are upon us, last minute shopping is taking place, plans are being finalized, ugly sweaters, Santa hats, and reindeer antlers are getting worn. The holiday season is a lot of fun and it is also a costly endeavor, so looking for bargains, deals, and using general money savings strategies is always a priority. Toward that end, many people will take to the roads this holiday season to avoid the hassle and cost of flying or other forms of mass transit to gather with friends and loved ones.
Having just returned from a (on the early side) holiday road trip, I can say with certainty the following tips can save you time, headaches, and money if you have a road trip of your own coming up.See publication Tips and Tricks for Successful Holiday Road TripsSee publication

publication titleCombating Colorism: Love the Skin You’re Inpublication dateNov 17, 2015 publication descriptionLia World Travelerpublication descriptionRecently I had the privilege of spending the day conversing on a variety of topics with rising policy experts and political progressives, who also happen to be people of color. One of the guest speakers and conversation leaders was from South Africa and she spoke with us about a variety of themes from the apartheid and post-apartheid era and the transition moving from one to the other. An interesting conversation thread was about the “born free generation”, a generation born in 1994-1995, in post-apartheid South Africa now in university and beginning to enter the work force. This generation has no experience living under apartheid and exist in a society more prone to possibility and hope despite the devastating influence the legacy of apartheid still exerts on South African society; from lack of economic opportunity, (and opportunity in general), too little to no social mobility especially for “black” South Africans and to a lesser extent “colored” South Africans.See publication Combating Colorism: Love the Skin You’re InSee publication
publication titleWhy Can’t My Hair Be Real?publication dateNov 4, 2015 publication descriptionLia World Travelerpublication descriptionIn the last 48 hours I have had separate conversations with four acquaintances, all white females (three at my workplace and one at my children’s school) about my hair. Let me preface this post by saying I have 5-year old locs and for the last few months have been getting more and more into the spirit of do-it-yourself (DIY) styling and experimentation (check out my Loc Style Library section to see what I am talking about). In this particular instance my hair was styled into a cute high bun with some faux bangs (i.e. locs curled/bent in half to give the appearance of bangs), a fairly easy style to execute and certainly attention grabbing, which are ultimately the goals of any good hair style.See publication Why Can’t My Hair Be Real?See publication

I want feedback from my bosses, those I supervise, and my peers so that I can improve. Peers and friends seek me out for my feedback so they can improve. And my children need feedback so they know how to behave. In short, we all need frequent feedback. Feedback from others is the fastest way to improve, it is how we learn and excel.
